Ingredients

1 French baguette

3 medium onions, thinly sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 15-20 minutes until they become soft and caramelized. Add the minced garlic for the last 2 minutes of cooking. Stir in balsamic vinegar, thyme, salt, and pepper, and cook for another minute. Remove from heat.

Prepare the Bread: Slice the French baguette in half lengthwise. Place the halves cut-side up on a baking sheet.

Make the Garlic Butter: In a bowl, combine the softened butter with remaining minced garlic (2 cloves), 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and a pinch of pepper. Spread this garlic butter mixture generously over each half of the baguette.

Add the Onions: Distribute the caramelized onion mixture evenly over the buttered baguette halves.

Top with Cheese: Generously sprinkle Gruyère cheese on top of the onions.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the edges of the bread are golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute. Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the top for a touch of freshness. Slice into individual pieces and serve warm.
