Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 teaspoons dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Pasta: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Cook Meat: Add ground beef or sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Sauces and Seasoning: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried basil, oregano, sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until creamy and well-blended.

Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce and half of the remaining mozzarella cheese. Stir well to combine.

Assemble the Ziti: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture evenly. Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over the first layer. Top with the remaining ziti, followed by the rest of the ricotta, and finish with the remaining mozzarella and optional grated Parmesan on top.

Bake: Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.
