The Original Joe Sandwich stands out for its rich flavors and simple ingredients. The main star is ground beef. I recommend using 80/20 beef for the best taste and texture. You can also use turkey or plant-based beef for a healthier option.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 bell pepper, finely chopped (red or green)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns

4 slices of cheddar cheese

Optional toppings: pickles, lettuce, and tomatoes

Instructions

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of oil. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

Cook the Beef: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula, around 7-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Flavorings: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, mustard, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients. Let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes on low heat to meld the flavors.

Assemble the Sandwich: Toast the hamburger buns lightly in a separate skillet or in a toaster. Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the bottom half of each bun.

Melt the Cheese: Place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the beef mixture. If desired, cover the skillet for a minute to help melt the cheese, or place the assembled sandwiches under the broiler for a minute until bubbly.

Add Toppings: Finish with pickles, lettuce, and tomato slices as desired. Place the top half of the buns atop the sandwiches.

Serve: Serve the Original Joe Sandwiches hot with a side of crispy potato chips or a fresh salad.
