1
cup
whole milk or plant-based milk
2
teaspoons
loose black tea or 2 tea bags
1
tablespoon
fresh ginger, grated
4
pods
green cardamom, crushed
2
whole
cloves
1
small
cinnamon stick
1
teaspoon
brown sugar or to taste
a pinch
smoked paprika
a few
mint leaves for garnish
Instructions
In a saucepan, combine the water, grated ginger, crushed cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to extract the flavors of the spices.
Add the loose black tea or tea bags to the saucepan and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Stir in the milk and brown sugar, and increase the heat back to medium. Allow the mixture to reach just below boiling, stirring occasionally.
As the chai heats, sprinkle in a pinch of smoked paprika and stir well to incorporate the smoky flavor.
Remove from heat and strain the chai through a fine mesh sieve into cups or a teapot to remove the spices and tea leaves.
Serve hot, garnishing with fresh mint leaves if desired.
Notes
Adjust the sweetness and smokiness to your preference.
