Ingredients

1 pound ground beef or turkey

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 green bell pepper, finely chopped

1 cup tomato sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

8 slices of sourdough or whole grain bread

4 slices of cheddar cheese

4 slices of pepper jack cheese

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or turkey) and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Drain any excess grease.

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet, cooking until softened (about 5 minutes).

Stir in the tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

In another skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place two slices of bread in the skillet, and top them each with a slice of cheddar and pepper jack cheese.

Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture over the cheese, then top with another slice of cheese and finish with two more slices of bread on top.

Carefully flip the sandwich after about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown, adding another tablespoon of butter to the skillet beforehand. Cook the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes, ensuring the cheese is melted and the bread is crisp.

Repeat the process for the remaining sandwiches until all ingredients are used.

Slice the sandwiches in half and serve hot, allowing guests to see the gooey, cheesy Sloppy Joe filling.
