Ingredients

1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on preference)

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

4 hamburger buns (preferably brioche)

1 cup lettuce, shredded

1 large tomato, sliced

½ red onion, thinly sliced

¼ cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Pickles (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and Italian sausage. Use your hands to mix gently until well combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into balls.

Preheat the Grill or Skillet: Heat your grill or a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add the olive oil to prevent sticking.

Smash the Patties: Once the grill or skillet is hot, place the meatballs onto the cooking surface. Using a flat spatula or a burger press, smash each ball down to form a thin patty (about ½ inch thick). Season with salt and pepper.

Cook the Patties: Cook for about 3-4 minutes on the first side, then carefully flip the patties. Immediately place a generous handful of shredded cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the patties are nicely browned.

Toast the Buns: While the patties finish cooking, slice the hamburger buns in half and toast them lightly on the grill or in the skillet until golden brown.

Assemble the Burgers: Spread mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a cheesy sausage smash patty, then pile on the shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, and pickles if using. Cap it off with the top half of the bun.

Serve: Serve immediately while hot, and enjoy your Sausage Smash Burgers with your favorite sides!
