Ingredients

For the butter bars:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

For the salted caramel topping:

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

Prepare the Butter Bar Base: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Bake the Base: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let it cool in the pan while you prepare the caramel.

Make the Salted Caramel: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Allow it to boil for 2-3 minutes without stirring.

Add Sea Salt and Vanilla: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sea salt and vanilla extract. Allow the caramel sauce to cool for a few minutes until it thickens slightly.

Assemble the Bars: Once the butter bars are cooled, pour the salted caramel sauce evenly over the top. Spread it with a spatula to ensure an even layer. Let it set for about 30 minutes at room temperature or refrigerate for quicker setting.

Cut and Serve: Once the caramel has hardened, lift the bars out using the parchment overhang. Cut them into squares or rectangles. Serve at room temperature and enjoy the perfect sweet and salty treat!
