The Philly Cheesesteak is more than just a sandwich; it is a beloved culinary icon that originates from the bustling streets of Philadelphia. This hearty dish, traditionally made with thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and a hoagie roll, has captured the hearts (and appetites) of food lovers across the country. Its rich history dates back to the 1930s, when it was first created by Pat and Harry Olivieri, who served the sandwich from a food cart. Over the decades, the Philly Cheesesteak has evolved, but its core elements remain unchanged: the combination of savory beef, gooey cheese, and a soft, warm bread.

Ingredients

1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, thinly sliced

1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced

1 cup thinly sliced cooked steak (ribeye or sirloin)

1 cup provolone cheese, shredded

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Optional: sliced jalapeños for extra heat

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and bell pepper, sautéing until they are soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.

Add the thinly sliced cooked steak to the skillet, stirring to combine. Sprinkle in the garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the mixture is heated through. Remove the skillet from the heat.

On a large baking sheet, unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into triangles. Arrange the triangles in a circle, overlapping them slightly, leaving a space in the center for the filling.

Spoon the steak and pepper mixture onto the wide ends of the crescent triangles. Sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese on top of the meat mixture.

Starting from the wide end, fold each triangle over the filling towards the center of the ring. Pinch the edges to seal and create a circular shape.

Brush the tops of the dough with the beaten egg for a golden finish. Optionally, sprinkle with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the crescent ring is golden brown and foamy.

Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. Slice and serve with your favorite dipping sauce, like marinara or ranch, for extra flavor. Enjoy!
