Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

1 can (15 ounces) ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and ground beef (or sausage) and cook until the meat is browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute until fragrant.

Combine Ingredients: Add the marinara sauce to the meat mixture, and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Season with Italian herbs, salt, and pepper.

Mix Cheeses: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, and ½ cup of Parmesan cheese. Mix until well blended.

Assemble the Ziti: In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked ziti in the bottom. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the pasta, followed by half of the meat sauce. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, ricotta, and meat sauce. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (not touching the cheese) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Serve: Let the baked ziti cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
