Ingredients

1 pound ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

1 large egg

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

4 sub rolls or hoagie buns

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Olive oil for brushing

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, parsley, egg, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs in batches (do not overcrowd) and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. They will finish cooking in the oven.

Once browned, transfer the meatballs to a baking dish, and pour the marinara sauce over them, covering each meatball well.

Top the meatballs with shredded mozzarella cheese, covering the sauce and meatballs completely.

Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

While the meatballs are baking, slightly toast the sub rolls in the oven or on a skillet until crisp.

Once cooked, carefully place meatballs along with sauce and cheese into each sub roll.

Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, and serve immediately.
