Ingredients

1 pound ground beef or sausage (or a combination of both)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 loaf of sliced bread (white or rye)

2 tablespoons butter, softened

Optional toppings: chopped green onions, sliced jalapeños, or additional cheese

Instructions

In a large skillet, sauté the chopped onion over medium heat until translucent (about 3-4 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and cooked through (about 7-10 minutes). Drain any excess fat.

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and fold in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and combined.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Spread the softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Lay the buttered slices (butter side down) on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the meat mixture onto each slice of bread, ensuring it's well-covered.

Optional: Add additional toppings like green onions, jalapeños, or more cheese on top of the meat mixture.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the bread are golden and crispy.

Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing into halves or quarters for serving.
