Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup diced ham (preferably smoked)

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

Freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder. Whisk until well mixed.

Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced ham until evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing, as this can lead to tough biscuits.

In a separate bowl, melt the butter and then pour 1/4 cup of it into the prepared baking dish, coating the bottom evenly.

Using a spoon or an ice cream scoop, dollop the biscuit dough into the baking dish over the melted butter, leaving some space between each biscuit as they will spread while baking.

Drizzle the remaining melted butter over the tops of the biscuits, and sprinkle with freshly cracked black pepper.

Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden and fluffy.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
