Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred for juiciness)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon butter

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns

Fresh thyme leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Onions: In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add the balsamic vinegar and Worcestershire sauce during the last few minutes of cooking. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.

Form the Patties: While the onions are cooking, divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape them into patties. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

Grill the Burgers: Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover to melt.

Assemble the Burgers: Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or skillet. Place each cheese-topped beef patty on the bottom half of the bun. Spoon a generous amount of caramelized onions over the top of the cheese and cover with the other half of the bun.

Serve and Garnish: If desired, garnish each burger with fresh thyme leaves for added flavor and presentation. Serve with fries or a side salad.
