The origins of the French dip sandwich can be traced back to the early 20th century in Los Angeles, California. The dish consists of a soft French roll filled with thinly sliced roast beef, served with a side of beef broth for dipping. As the sandwich gained popularity, food lovers began to experiment with variations, leading to the creation of the French dip biscuits. Instead of the traditional bread roll, these biscuits provide a fluffy and buttery base that complements the savory filling perfectly.

Ingredients

For the Biscuits:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

3/4 cup buttermilk

For the Beef:

1 lb thinly sliced roast beef (deli style or leftover roast)

2 cups beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

1 cup shredded provolone cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Make the Biscuits:

    - Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).

      - In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.

        - Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, incorporate the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

          - Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.

            - Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently fold it over itself a few times to create layers. Pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle and cut out rounds using a biscuit cutter.

              - Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

                Prepare the Beef:

                  - In a medium saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then lower the heat and let it gently cook for about 10 minutes.

                    - Add the thinly sliced roast beef to the broth and allow it to warm through for about 5 minutes.

                      Assemble the French Dip Biscuits:

                        - Split the baked biscuits in half and place a generous portion of the warm, saucy roast beef on the bottom half.

                          - Top the beef with shredded provolone cheese and place the biscuit tops on.

                            - Return the filled biscuits to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is nicely melted.

                              Serve:

                                - Carefully remove the biscuits from the oven, drizzle with some of the beef broth for added flavor, and garnish with chopped parsley.

                                  - Serve warm with a small bowl of remaining beef broth for dipping.
