The easy baked ziti recipe needs just a few key ingredients. First, you must select the right pasta. Ziti pasta works best because it holds sauce well. You can also use penne if you can't find ziti. Both shapes have a nice bite and texture.

Ingredients

12 ounces ziti pasta

1 tablespoon olive oil

½ pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

24 ounces marinara sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the ziti pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef or sausage, onion, and garlic. Cook until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

Stir in the marinara sauce, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.

In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the egg and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce, ensuring the pasta is well-coated.

Spread half of the pasta mixture in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with half of the ricotta mixture and one-third of the mozzarella cheese.

Layer the remaining pasta mixture on top, dolloping the remaining ricotta mixture over it. Finally, sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese and the Parmesan cheese.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Once done, let the baked ziti cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
