Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Sea salt flakes for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy using an electric mixer (about 3-4 minutes).

Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the mixture, then beat until well combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.

Fold in the chocolate chips, reserving a few for the top of the bars.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the batter, then carefully add dollops of the remaining batter on top, spreading it gently (it doesn’t need to be perfect).

Drizzle the rest of the caramel sauce on top of the batter and sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips over it.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Once baked, remove from the oven and let the bars cool in the pan for at least 10-15 minutes. If desired, sprinkle a few sea salt flakes over the top for a touch of flavor.

Carefully lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper, and let them cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into squares.
