Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

1 cup warm water (110°F)

1 tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil, plus more for greasing

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 tbsp dried oregano or Italian seasoning

1 tbsp minced garlic (optional)

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Make Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the olive oil and the activated yeast mixture. Stir until the dough begins to come together.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning it to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare Filling: While the dough is rising, mix the mozzarella and cheddar cheese in a bowl. If using, add minced garlic and dried oregano to the cheese mixture.

Shape the Tree: After the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about 12x18 inches).

Cut and Fill: Cut the dough into star-shaped pieces or triangles for the tree structure. Place a heaping spoonful of cheese mixture on the wide end of each piece. Roll up and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, arranging them into a tree shape (with the point of the triangle facing up).

Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg and brush it over the bread. This will give it a beautiful golden color when baked.

Second Rise: Cover the tree with a cloth and let it rise again for about 20-30 minutes.

Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Garnish: Allow to cool slightly, then sprinkle with fresh parsley for a festive touch!

Serve: Pull apart the cheesy bread tree and enjoy with marinara or a dipping sauce of your choice.
